A chilling thriller with a nail biting ending!
I was kindly gifted this book from Tandem Collective to take part in their readalong.
One By One by Ruth Ware
Snow is falling in the exclusive alpine ski resort of Saint Antoine, as the shareholders and directors of Snoop, the hottest new music app, gather for a make or break corporate retreat to decide the future of the company. At stake is a billion-dollar dot com buyout that could make them all millionaires, or leave some of them out in the cold.
The clock is ticking on the offer, and with the group irrevocably split, tensions are running high. When an avalanche cuts the chalet off from help, and one board member goes missing in the snow, the group is forced to ask – would someone resort to murder, to get what they want?
4 / 5
The book immediately begins by introducing you to 10 characters which does feel a little daunting at first but once you get into it they all fall into place.
Each chapter is narrated by either Erin or Liz and before each chapter begins you can see their Snoop ID, number of subscribers, what they’re listening to etc. I thought this was great to keep the reader involved with the Snoop app and also I’d recommend keeping an eye on this as you go through the book as you notice some changes with subscribers which may just be a clue.
There isn’t much action to begin with but it’s really not needed as the author slowly builds the tension, places seeds of doubt and as you go along it feels like the walls of the chalet are closing in on you. Plus with so many characters you will suspect nearly everyone!
The best part though has to be the last few chapters (I won’t say too much to avoid spoilers) as you find out who is behind all the murders and then what transpires is one of the best and most chilling chase scenes I’ve read! I was on the edge of my seat and at times wanted to scream at the character to get up and hide because they’re coming for you!
The way the author described the settings and handled those last few chapters were fantastic. It felt like a horror film that I couldn’t escape from.
Overall this is a well thought out murder mystery with a chilling and nail biting ending!
