A powerful, emotional and compelling look at motherhood!
The Push by Ashley Audrain
The arrival of baby Violet was meant to be the happiest day of my life. But as soon as I held her in my arms I knew something wasn’t right.
I had always known that the women in my family aren’t meant to be mothers.
My husband Fox says I’m imagining it. He tells me I’m nothing like my own mother, and that Violet is the sweetest child.
But she’s different with me. Something feels very wrong.
Is it her? Or is it me? Is she the monster? Or am I?
If I could write just a one word review it would just say PERFECT. This book was everything and more and one that still has me thinking about it now.
Narrated by Blythe in the first person, we discover what has happened over the years, not just with Blythe herself but also her own Mother and Grandmother. As simple as all this sounds, at times Blythe doesn’t feel like the most trustworthy of narrators. There will be many times throughout when you will question what Blythe believes to have happened is true or not.
Being a mother myself I feel is one of the reasons why this book made an impact on me so much. The story bares everything about motherhood, not the joyful moments that you expect every mother to feel, instead it’s raw, unfiltered and delves into the ‘taboo’ side of things….what happens if you don’t instantly connect to your child or feel that instant love that everyone says is inevitable?!
Blythe is suffering, she has done all her life and my heart ached for her sometimes. At times I was Blythe, I was in her head, she was under my skin and I can only say I felt that way from the authors brilliant writing. Everything about this book is dark, its uncomfortable and very emotional at times, especially during one part (no spoilers) which is the catalyst for Blythe’s thinking and actions.
This book raises so many questions and one that many readers will have completely unique thoughts on. My thoughts….I believe Blythe’s account on what has happened.
This story is so powerful and I knew halfway through I was going to give it five stars, however the very last line, on the final page cemented that fact for me….what an ending – perfection!
Overall this book is just incredible and will definitely be in my top 10 books of 2021.
